Since 2003 Werner & Mertz has voluntarily had its Mainz site and since 2005 its Hallein (Austria) site validated against EMAS criteria. An independent EMAS expert regularly examines the production and manufacturing facilities. EMAS, the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme of the European Union is considered to be the world's most demanding system for sustainable environmental management. The expert's report makes successes just as transparent as it does the areas in need of improvement.

EMAS companies give strong impetus for a sustainable and legally compliant economy. They cannot take full advantage of EMAS benefits, however, as the European Parliament has banned use of the EMAS logo on products and their packaging.

EMAS: Quality seal for sustainable environmental management.

The rationale states that EMAS is a production and site certification and that products are not always manufactured at one site. The advertising ban involving EMAS on products affects companies like Werner & Mertz that are completely EMAS certified.

In the interests of the consumer, we consider it necessary to provide extensive product and manufacturing-related information. EMAS could add to that transparency. Werner & Mertz is therefore committed to making EMAS better known as a sign of environmentally conscious production.

The system has been continuously developed since the first version of the EMAS regulations were issued in 1993. The current version is EMAS III. Participation is open to all companies, agencies and associations – in short, all organizations interested in improving their environmental performance, regardless of their size or industry. Organizations participate voluntarily and at their own expense.

EMAS III audits core indicators in six key areas:

Key Area Input / Impact
Energy Efficiency Total annual direct energy use in MWh or GJ
Total use of renewable energy:
Share of energy from renewable energy sources in annual total consumption (electricity and heat)
Water Annual water consumption in m³
Waste Annual generation of waste according to type of waste in tons
Annual generation of hazardous waste in kilograms or tons
Biological Diversity Use of land in m² of developed area
Emissions Total annual emission of greenhouse gases, at a minimum the emission of CO2, CH4, N2O, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and SF6, in tons of CO2 equivalent
Total annual air emission, at a minimum the emission of SO2, NOX and PM, in kilograms or tons
